ALDI, one of the fastest-growing U.S. retailers, is proving to be a leader in the sustainability arena. They eliminated plastic shopping bags in all their stores by the end of 2023, which would prevent nearly 4,400 tons or nine million pounds of plastic into circulation each year. The company also unveiled a plan to transition to natural refrigerants by 2035. Currently, over 600 stores use natural refrigerants, reducing their potential carbon emissions by 60% each year. ALDI is the recipient of the Environmental Protection Agency’s GreenChilli Store Certification Excellence for its environment-friendly refrigeration practices.
“As one of America’s fastest-growing retailers, we take our responsibility to lead the industry in sustainability seriously, so our customers don’t have to choose between shopping responsibly and saving money,” said Jason Hart, CEO, ALDI. ALDI has cloth bags available at their stores for customers to purchase their own reusable bags.
