The United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27) is currently held in Egypt from November 6-18, 2022. COP27 presents an opportunity for all the countries to come together and make decisions that will impact the future of every species on this planet.
Top priorities on the agenda include:
- Finance for loss and damage associated with Climate Change impacts
- Matters relating to development and transfer of technologies
- Work Programme for mitigation and implementation
- Work Programme on adaptation
- Carry-over issues from the Paris Agreement Implementations
- Enhancing transparency and accountability throughout the UN Climate Change process
Speaking at the conference, the Secretary General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres emphasized,” we are on a highway to climate hell with our foot still on the accelerator”. He also suggested developed economies tax the fossil fuel companies and redirect those funds to countries suffering the damage.
Pakistan, a country that is responsible for less than one percent of global carbon emissions witnessed catastrophic floods this year. At the conference, they are leading the call for rich nations to compensate the poor countries for loss and damage due to climate events. Barbados, an eastern Caribbean Island is also a frontrunner in echoing the need to reform the global financial architecture. As discussions and negotiations continue, we will have to wait for the outcome as world leaders rally on a global stage.
