Extreme heat causes heat related illness and puts millions of people and animals at risk. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, hundreds of people are killed due to high temperatures. It is important to take measures to keep your body cool and stay informed.
- Buy or create draft stoppers for doors and windows to keep the cold air inside.
- Hang curtains or shutters on windows for shade.
- Use a regular fan or ceiling fan to circulate air in the room.
- Apply solar window film to help control light or heat coming through
- Stay hydrated. Ensure you are drinking enough water even if you don’t feel thirsty.
- Drink right – stay away from alcoholic and sugary drinks.
- Eat and drink food items that cool your body. For example, watermelon, coconut water, lemon water, yogurt, zucchini, cucumber, cantaloupe, celery etc.
- Do not forget sunscreen!
- Wear loose, lightweight, and light-colored clothing.
- Take cool showers to cool your body down.
- Limit the use of heat producing appliances like stove, oven, and dryer. Air-dry or Line-dry your clothes instead. Try outdoor grilling or use a slow cooker to help keep the heat out.
- Stay in an air conditioned location as much as you can.
- Move more, sit less.
- Exercise with caution when outdoors.
- Prepare an emergency first-aid kit.
