The Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing will span over 10 lanes of Highway 101, stretching more than 200 feet to close a crucial gap in protecting our wildlife and habitat. This bridge, located northwest of downtown Los Angeles is expected to be completed by 2025 will help protect mountain lions, coyotes, deer, snakes, lizards, and other wildlife to navigate safely from the protected Agoura Hills across the freeway to the Santa Monica Mountains.
The $87 million project’s groundbreaking ceremony was conducted in April 2022. California Governor Gavin Newsom announced $50 million for other similar projects in the State. The Santa Monica Mountains Federation created a special nursery that will grow all the flora to be used at the Crossing.
Structures are built across roadways connecting the wildlife areas using a variety of overpasses and underpasses. These are common in most parts of Europe and Canada. The wildlife crossing will provide a way for animals to coexist in a world where the urban areas are predominantly paved for growth and development. The scope of work serves as a model for collaborative solutions for wildlife with the transportation sector.
