Amazon is the largest tropical rainforest in the world of which the majority 60 percent is in Brazil. This forest is home to hundreds of many endangered plant and wildlife species. The deforestation fell by 68% compared to last year under the current President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva recording a major accomplishment since he took office. After years of destruction and devastation in the rainforest, Lula pledged to end deforestation and protect indigenous territories during his election campaign. His administration also plans to end forest clearance by 2030 through replanting and restoring native vegetation.
During an event on World Environment Day, the President unveiled a plan to be implemented in the next four years to halt the illegal deforestation. “Brazil will once again become a global reference in sustainability, tackling climate change, and achieving targets for carbon emission reduction and zero deforestation”, he said. Adding to that, Lula announced that Brazil will readjust to be on track to achieve the promises made during the 2015 Paris Agreement translating to significant decrease of carbon emissions from the region.
