The City of Farmers Branch, a Dallas County Suburb with the population of 35,991 is all set to generate 13.6 million kilowatt-hours of electricity by constructing a Solar Farm. Electricity generated will have the capacity to power all the city-owned buildings, streetlights, and other assets along with 1,100 homes. The New York based company, BQ Energy Development will design, build, and operate the facility.
The project is set to be built over a 20-acre land on the city’s former landfill and expected to be completed by 2024. Typically, the closed landfills are repurposed to either parks or wildlife refuge. Situated between two highly trafficked thoroughfares in an industrial area, the city chose a solar farm as the perfect use for the site.
The City of Farmers Branch is moving towards achieving a more sustainable future just like the City of Georgetown and City of Denton in Texas. The City of Georgetown switched to 100 percent renewable energy in 2018. The City of Denton has passed a resolution to provide its electric customers with 100 percent renewable energy as early as either 2020 or 2024.
